Best Brisket Sandwich

Fatty Cue
50 Carmine St (bet. Bleecker & Bedford)
 New York, NY 10014

After going to Fatty 'Cue Brooklyn a year ago, I was thrilled to learn about the opening of a Fatty 'Cue in the West Village and lucky enough to have dinner there on the Friday of opening week. The entrance to the restaurant is through enormous wood-paneled doors and I stepped off of Carmine Street into a cavernous yet lively dining room. Usually when I go to a recently opened restaurant I find that they are still figuring out logistics and service; this was not the case at Fatty 'Cue - our server was awesome. She recommended cocktails (Chupacabra and Smokin' Bone, both delicious) and gave us enough suggestions/time to decide on a perfect menu. We started with the Ham, Jam, Butter & Bread which was a great substitution for your regular bread basket - especially if you grew up in a pretzel-worshiping household like I did. Next we chose Steamed & Crushed New Potatoes, Trippa "Malaysiana," and the Borscht. All three dishes were unique and gave us a sampling of the creative genius happening in the kitchen. Our final dish of the night came, and although our forks were slowing down, we couldn't resist devouring the Smoked Brandt Beef Brisket. The Brisket came with clothbound cheddar (which I got to eat all of due to my boyfriend's peculiar disdain for cheese), blistered chilies, roasted onion, shiso, cider vinegar, and soft rolls. The soft rolls were reminiscent of the steamed buns used for Momofuku Pork Buns - yes, that good. We stuffed them with the juicy brisket and aforementioned extras to create a brisket sandwich, the Best I Ever ate.
